It’s not necessary to be a handyman or good with tools in order to maintain an HVAC system.

In fact, it’s actually rather simple and can be done without taking up too much time.

Without further ado, here are some actionable tips for AC maintenance.

Stay On Top of Air Filters

HVAC systems circulate the air, but it’s the air filters that make it breathable. Therefore, there’s no room for error when dealing with the air filters.

First of all, it’s obviously ideal to buy a high-quality air filter. By doing so, they’ll last longer—saving money in the long run—and be more effective.

While a high-quality air filter will last longer, it doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be replaced. Air filters should be replaced quarterly or whenever they start looking dirty. It’s the only way to ensure the HVAC is circulating the freshest air.

Keep Nature Away from the AC and Heat Units

In time, it’s common for AC and heat units to accumulate pollen, leaves, and grass, especially if the yard is regularly being mowed. While this is natural, they still need to be cleaned.

If too much of this excess material gathers around the units, they could become disrupted or tainted. For this reason, it’s a good idea to give outdoor units about two-feet of elbow room. That way, they are less likely to accumulate debris.

Prevent Clogging

Sometimes, air conditioners can become clogged with algae and mold, which greatly impacts the AC unit’s ability to do its job.

To prevent this clogging from happening, try pouring a cocktail of bleach and water down the condensate drain of the air conditioner. The bleach and water will go a long way in killing any bothersome mold and algae that have built up over time.

DIY HVAC Maintenance for Homeowners

The HVAC system is the backbone of every home. Without it, the summers would be sweltering and the winters would be bitter. Even on a good day, a home with no circulation is like a body with no blood flow.

With the easy-to-implement tips listed above, anybody can perform regular HVAC maintenance. Getting an HVAC system fixed can be made easy, but that’s no reason to shorten its lifespan.
